TSA Guide to Holiday Shopping… Online!

Latest News - Posted by Kirstin Richter on November 25, 2009

I’ll admit it… I love to shop. And I especially love to shop online. It fits perfectly into my constantly changing schedule and does not require a parking spot. And in this age of careful budgeting, online shopping allows for some serious deal sleuthing.

Here’s a few suggestions for some of my fave online retailers to help with your holiday shopping this year:

Chapters Indigo
Ok, this may seem like an obvious one but have you actually gone online and perused their selection lately? So much more than books. Check out this cool sled for example. And any order over $39 qualifies for free shipping. Not to mention that the majority of the items are cheaper than their in store counterparts.

Skoah
Skoah is a spa (there are currently three locations in Western Canada) but it is also an online shopping oasis when it comes to high quality skincare items. Their customer service rocks and if you sign up for their online updates, you will often receive discounts and bonus items for shopping online. They have a great selection of specially themed holiday gifts to choose from too.

Style Kid

Another local goodie. Based in Port Moody, Style Kid is a great place to find unique kid and baby items often at a really great price. They carry fun lines like Paul Frank, Krawlers and Skip*Hop. Currently, their ‘12 Days of Christmas Sale’ is on which offers new deals each day.

LL Bean

Yes, this is based in the States but with our dollar where it’s at right now, it’s really not that much more to shop here. They have super helpful customer service staff and items ship quickly. In addition to offering great basics like rain jackets and puffy vests, they also have some fun and well-priced items like these adorable kid’s slippers.

Etsy

And last, but certainly not least is Etsy, the online queen of cool handmade and vintage stuff. Most of the retailers are super responsive and personable and I’ve never had an issue with receiving anything. I know this is meant to be about shopping for others, but I couldn’t resist this owl napkin holder which now has a prominent spot in my kitchen.

Happy holiday shopping!

STEWART BUTTERFIELD IN HAT 2

FLICKR CO-FOUNDER STEWART BUTTERFIELD IS KEYNOTE AT FUSION ‘09

Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr, reportedly the most popular photo sharing site in the world, will be the Keynote Speaker at the 3rd Fusion Venture Forum 2009, presented by New Media BC on November 12 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Butterfield is a firm supporter of Vancouver’s Digital Media industry and was part of the original team that grew Flickr from a tiny Vancouver based operation to a worldwide phenomenon. He and his co-founder Caterina Fake sold Flickr to Yahoo reportedly for more than $30 million, barely a year after launching it in February2004. The original plan had been to create an online game that never quite took off. Flickr remains one of the most noted digital media success stories from this region.

Butterfield will open Fusion ’09, the only Venture Forum devoted to Digital Media in Western Canada, by sharing his success story with some 150-200 attendees, mostly Canadian founders with early to growth stage ventures. Twenty of Canada’s hottest digital media companies will present their latest ventures to top tier investors from North America, including heavyweights Google Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners and SoftTech VC.

National Digital Media Day 2009

Canadians pave the way in i-phone app development
Appy Hour Marks the 2nd Annual National Digital Media Day

National Digital Media Day kicks off next week in Vancouver with the launch of a new event called Appy Hour, hosted by The Social Agency, in partnership with Rogers Communications, designed to inform, connect and provide opportunities for the rapidly growing industry surrounding Apple’s i-phone.

Worldwide, the app industry is bigger than ever. There are over 4 billion mobile subscribers at last count, and for the first time ever in 2009, half of all new connections to the internet will come from a phone instead of a PC.

On September 25 at 4PM at the Diamond in Gastown, Appy Hour will bring this industry together in Vancouver to share resources with two of Canada’s most successful i-phone app developers.

Michael Fergusson, CEO, Ayogo and the CBC’s digital guru Jonathan Carrigan will discuss the critical issues they encountered- in development, marketing, and management- to launch successful products with Apple. They’ll offer behind-the-scenes insights relevant to both developers and managers seeking to capitalize in this space.

“More than ever before, app developers need information, resources and a bit of inside information from the pioneers who’ve already successfully launched with Apple’s i-phone.” Says Monica Krake, Communications Director, The Social Agency, “By bringing this community together to access expertise from pros like Michael Fergusson and Jonathan Carrigan, The Social Agency is applauding National Digital Media Day’s goal to support and promote Canada’s interactive digital community.”

Says Lynda Brown-Ganzert, Founder of National Digital Media Day, “Canada is producing some of the best digital content out there, but companies have big challenges to overcome if we want to be world-leaders in this burgeoning sector. National Digital Media Day brings the industry together to discuss these opportunities and to raise the profile of emerging talent – like the people presenting at Appy Hour.”

Appy Hour happens Friday, September 25th, 2009 from 4 PM to 6 PM
(Presentation starts at 4:30 PM)
@ The Diamond, 6 Powell Street, Gastown.

National Digital Media Day happens every September 25; it’s an annual day, pioneered by industry enthusiasts, to raise the profile of the digital media industry and celebrate the dynamic work happening in this sector.

TSA guide to buying local

Latest News - Posted by Kirstin Richter on August 25, 2009

‘Buy local’ is a refrain we are all getting used to hearing these days so we thought it would be fun to share some of The Social Agency’s fave local vendors…

Mink Chocolates

Yummy, hand-crafted chocolates in chic packaging.  Cafe offers fondue and wifi.  Seriously what else do you need?

Bloom Essentials

Have been hitting this Kitsilano spa for years, mostly because their in house product lines are so fab.  Especially love their Bug & Pickle line for moms and babes.

Dream

Boutique in the heart of Gastown that has been showcasing local designers since 2003.  Features great lines like Vancouver’s own Erin Templeton, Chulo Pony and Allison Wonderland.

Popo’s Ponchos
Perfect gift for the stylish toddler in your life.

The Wood Co-op

The place to go for unique yet practical gifts.  We love the Double Vision picture frame and Natural Pacific Vase.

Kensington Square Wines

Great selection of BC wines including personal faves like See Ya Later Ranch’s Gewurtraminer and Mt. Boucherie’s Gamay Noir.

Dotted Loop

This jewelry line is uber eco-friendly cause not only is it produced locally, it’s made with recycled vintage items.  We dig the Mr T necklace.

Your local farmer’s market

Of course, nothing is more of a ‘buy local’ experience than meandering through one’s nearest farmer’s market.

We Heart Mentors

Latest News - Posted by Monica Krake on August 13, 2009

Imitation isn’t only the best form of flattery, it’s the best career building move.

Here’s my tip of the day: if you are launching into a new area of your career (building any type of new expertise), find the person in town who excels most in that area, find a way to get introduced, and ask them to mentor you. Don’t just ask for some friendly advice. Ask them to mentor you. It’s a loaded word, I know. But it’s the most effective way to successfully build your skills.

I’ve recently seen an up and coming music composer use this strategy with great results. He was introduced by a friend of a friend to the mentor of his dreams, someone he assumed was out of his league. The introduction went something like “I know a talented musician/composer who needs some direction around getting into writing music for television/the movies. Would you meet with him from time to time and offer some direction?’. You’d be surprised how many people will take someone under their wing simply because they are flattered, enjoy helping others, or maybe even feel it’ll pay off in other ways down the road. Mentorship is the best way to receive valuable guidance and maybe even contacts that would otherwise take much longer to develop.

So, brainstorm your ideal mentor and find a way to get introduced. Remember, there are only six degrees of separation, so the chances this strategy will work for you are higher than you might think.

Hello!
